Saturday, July 25th, 2009 | Poker Articles, Poker Strategy, Poker Tournament | No Comments

This article belongs to the Poker Tournament series. If you are not familiar with the concept of poker player levels start by reading my article: Poker player levels revisited. Having read my article, I will assume you are now a level 3 poker player :-). I will use the following situation as a starting point for my discussion: You are playing an online poker tournament and you pick up 7 diamonds 8 hearts in middle position. A player in early position raises 3xBB and you call. The rest of the Read more [...]

Poker player levels revisited

Saturday, July 25th, 2009 | Poker Articles, Poker Strategy, Poker Tournament | No Comments

This article belongs to the Poker Tournament series. My good poker buddy McTap wrote an excellent article some time ago about the second major leak he had discovered in his game. In this article he introduced us to the concept of poker player levels which I believe were first coined by Phil Gordon in his article : “Inside the mind” I’m revisiting the concept of poker player levels because I will be talking about it on The All in Poker Show later today. Currently I do not feel confident Read more [...]

This article belongs to the Poker Strategy series. Lately I have given a lot of thought to the notion of formulating an optimal strategy for playing low stakes MTT online tournaments. I'm pretty sure I don't have it nailed down yet, but I want to share what I have come up with so far. Maybe you have some ideas of your own to add to mine? Before I start I would like to share one of the most important things I have come to realize lately when it comes to optimizing your chances of winning an online Read more [...]

Thoughts on small stakes online multi table poker tournaments (MTTs)

Saturday, June 6th, 2009 | Poker Articles, Poker Tournament | No Comments

I have on average played around 5 small stakes (buyin of 20$ or less) online poker MTTs a week this year. That works out to 120 tournaments in total so far. Out of these 120 tournaments I have made the final table in two of them with a second place finish in a 10000$ guaranteed as my best result. Usually I have busted out during the middle or late stages meaning that on average each tournament represents 3 hours of playing time.  I just realize now that this means I have spent 300-400 hours this Read more [...]

Thoughts on poker tournament strategy

Saturday, May 2nd, 2009 | Poker Articles, Poker Strategy, Poker Tournament | 13 Comments

This article belongs to the Poker Tournament series. Lately I have come to realize that playing Multi-table Poker Tournaments requires a special mental mindset that not all poker players possess. On one hand you never stand to lose more than the tournament buyin, but the price you pay for this privilege is that most of the tournaments you enter will be a complete waste of time - when evaluated by a profit per hour criteria - unless you make it to the final table. The path to the final table Read more [...]

Poker is not a card game with people, it’s a people game with cards

Tuesday, March 24th, 2009 | Poker Articles, Poker Strategy, Poker Tournament | 10 Comments

Submitted by Vic Porcelli, this article belongs to the Poker Strategy series. Poker is a game of information.  To borrow a phrase from 1983 World Series of  Poker Main Event champ, Tom McEvoy, “…Poker is not a card game with people, it is a people game with cards.”  So how do we gather information about our opponents?  The first thing to learn is to not over think it.  Let’s look at information that is a little less intricate than observing how your opponent breathes after he makes Read more [...]

It happens to the best of us

Tuesday, March 10th, 2009 | Poker Articles, Poker Tournament | 3 Comments

Submitted by Dungbeetle, this article belongs to the Poker Tournament series. I find consolation in the fact that other and better tournament players also experience unbelievable misfortune. On a positive note it looks like Dungbeetle's 2009 results are coming around. Sigh... Just remembered why online tournaments are one of the most frustrating inventions in history. I was flying in the Pokerstars $50 rebuy, being chip leader from about 100 runners out till about 30 left. With 15 left I Read more [...]
