Sick of poker – but can’t stop playing

When ever I bust out of tourneys these days my first thought is always: “what an utter waste of time” followed by “why do I keep playing every week?”. The next line of action is usually to close my account for a number of days. The following evening, I find myself missing something to do. Poker has become a way of killing off some hours between workouts, updating this blog and spending time with my girlfriend. It’s almost become a habit. I seriously need something else to do in the time slot between coming home from work and going to bed. I also need to stop playing poker, when I’m not motivated to put in the long haul. Does anyone else feel the same way at times?

I know exactly how you feel. Perhaps you need to set yourself a goal. Something to aim for in the long run. That is what i did. Also, what type of tournament do you play? SnG? MTT? When you say you ‘bust out’ do you mean without cashing? Even a winning player can go a long time without a cash in MTTs, the variance is so high.
I play micro stakes with the goal of slowly moving up as I build my bankroll until i get to $300,000. Right now I am approaching $50. So a long way to go, it will probably take years, but I know i can beat the games I play and 4 out of 5 sessions are profitable so it is not demoralizing, even though it is small stakes my long term goal is motivating and beating the current level is rewarding.

Hi Elloraboy

Thanks for your comment. I usually play large MTTs and make minimum cashes regularly. The problem with MTTs is the huge variance and I haven’t had a decent win since November last year. Mind you this was a third place in the Pokerstars daily 90 grand, so I guess I can’t complain too much. My biggest problem has been playing when not motivated, which is definitely something I’m going to work on. I wish you the best of luck reaching 300000$.

I know what you mean! It’s not easy to stop. All you need is some motivation, and maybe some sunshine outside! Thats the clue for me to stop and go out. Wish you luck!
